Ethiopia had opal deposits long before anyone outside the country paid attention to them, going back to a modest find near Menz Gishe in the early 1990s that barely registered in the wider gem trade.

Everything changed once miners near Wegel Tena hit a seam of white and crystal opal in 2008. A second major find followed in 2013 at a site called Stayish, near Gashena, which produced Ethiopia's first significant black opal.

Geologically, this opal formed inside volcanic rock, specifically a type of rhyolitic ignimbrite, which is different from how Australian opal formed in sedimentary rock.

Silica-rich water moved through the porous volcanic layer and settled on top of a clay bed underneath, and over time that silica hardened into opal.

The seam itself runs along steep valley walls, and in most cases it's only about a meter thick, which is part of why mining it is such slow, careful work.

How the Mining Actually Works

This part surprises people. There's no machinery involved in most Ethiopian Opal mining, not because it wouldn't help, but because the rock is too fragile for it. Explosives would shatter the opal before anyone even saw it. So the work is done almost entirely by hand.

Miners dig short horizontal tunnels directly into the hillside, following the seam as it runs along the valley wall. In areas where the terrain allows it, particularly around Welo, some mining happens as open-pit digging instead, which is a bit safer and less physically brutal than tunneling.

Either way, the tools are basic, pickaxes, shovels, hand chisels, and the work is genuinely dangerous. The volcanic rock in this region is often fractured and loosely held together, so tunnel collapses are a real risk, and most of this mining happens without any formal safety equipment or engineering support.

This is artisanal mining in the truest sense, meaning it's small-scale, often family-run, and not backed by big mining companies.

Ethiopia's broader artisanal gemstone mining industry reportedly supports more than a million people, and opal alone makes up close to 98 percent of the country's precious stone exports. That's not a small side industry, it's a major part of the local economy in these regions.

What Happens Between the Mine and the Cutter

Rough opal doesn't go straight from a miner's hands to a jewelry workshop. It usually passes through a chain of local traders first, who buy parcels of rough from miners, sort it roughly by visible quality, and sell it on to larger dealers or exporters.

This part of the chain has real problems worth being upfront about, miners are often paid low prices for what they dig up, since they rarely have the ability to grade or negotiate the value of rough opal themselves.

Grading the Rough: What a Cutter Is Actually Looking For

Before any cutting starts, someone has to decide if a piece of rough is even worth working. This step is almost entirely about reading a stone that's still covered in its outer rock, called potch, with only a tiny hint of what's inside.

Cutters will grind or polish a small "window" into the surface, just enough to catch a glimpse of the play of color underneath.

From that tiny opening, an experienced cutter can often judge the pattern type, whether it's the tight little dots of pinfire, the broad splotches of a flame pattern, the parallel lines of a ribbon pattern, or the rare, interlocking cells of a honeycomb pattern, which is generally considered the most desirable. 

They're also checking for internal cracks, dead spots with no color at all, and how deep the good material runs before it hits potch again.

This step matters because opal doesn't behave like other gems. There's no predictable cleavage plane to guide a cut, the way there is with a diamond or a quartz crystal. Every decision from here on is based on reading that one small window and making a judgment call.

The Actual Cutting Process

Once a piece is chosen, the real shaping work starts, and it's slower and more failure-prone than most people expect.

Preforming

The cutter first grinds away the excess potch and rock to get down to a rough shape, usually deciding at this stage whether the final piece will be a freeform cabochon, an oval, a pear shape, or something dictated entirely by where the cracks and color sit in the stone.

Shaping and Doming

Using progressively finer grinding wheels, the cutter builds the dome shape that defines a cabochon. This step is where a lot of rough gets lost.

It's common to lose 70 to 80 percent of the original rough weight by the time a clean, well-formed cabochon comes out the other side, and stones with a lot of cracking lose even more. That waste is part of why finished opal costs more per carat than the rough it came from.

Sanding

The stone moves through a sequence of increasingly fine sanding grits to smooth out the scratches left by the grinding wheels. Skipping steps here shows up immediately in the final polish.

Polishing

A final polish, usually on a felt or leather wheel with a fine polishing compound, brings out the full brilliance of the play of color. This is the moment a cutter actually gets to see, for the first time, what the finished stone will really look like.

Because most Welo opal is hydrophane, meaning it can absorb water, cutters have to be careful about heat and drying speed throughout this entire process. Grinding generates heat, and a stone that dries out too fast after getting wet during cutting can develop internal stress cracks.

It's a genuinely delicate balance between working efficiently and not ruining a stone that took months to reach the workbench.

Setting the Stone Into Jewelry

Once a stone is cut and polished, a jeweler has to decide how to set it, and this decision matters more for opal than for most other gems.

Bezel settings, where a metal rim wraps fully around the stone's edge, are the standard choice for Ethiopian Opal, and for good reason. That rim protects the edges from knocks and helps shield the stone from repeated water exposure, which matters a lot for hydrophane material.

Prong settings, which are common for harder gems like sapphire or garnet, leave more of the stone exposed and are riskier for opal, especially in a ring that's going to see daily wear and constant hand-washing.

Beyond protection, the setting also shapes how the stone reads visually. A closed, oval bezel pendant shows off a stone's color in a contained, elegant way, while an open, freeform setting lets a more dramatic, irregular rough shape take center stage.
