We've been selling opal for a few years now, and this is genuinely the busiest we've seen the category get. Not cut, polished, expensive opal either. Raw opal. Rough chunks straight out of the ground, sold as-is. People used to ask us to point them toward a "finished" piece. Now half our opal questions are about the raw stuff, and almost all of it is Ethiopian.
So let's actually get into why that's happening, and since the question comes up in nearly every conversation, whether Ethiopian Opal or Australian Opal is the smarter buy.
A few things stacked on top of each other here, and none of them are complicated.
Cut and polished opal, no matter how nice, follows a shape. Oval, pear, freeform cabochon. Raw opal doesn't. It's whatever shape it broke into when it came out of the seam.
Two rough Ethiopian opals never look the same, not even close, and for a lot of buyers that's the entire point. They don't want "a nice opal." They want the one nobody else has.
Go look at what's selling in minimalist jewelry right now, raw citrine points, unpolished druzy, rough tourmaline slices. Raw opal fits that same lane. It looks intentional, not unfinished, which is a shift from ten years ago when raw meant "cheap" or "unfinished." Now raw means "authentic."
Cutting a stone throws material away. Every bit of rough that gets ground off to shape a cabochon is gone, and the labor to do it costs money too.
Skip the cutting entirely and a buyer can get a visibly bigger, more colorful piece of rough Ethiopian opal for what a small cut stone would cost elsewhere. For a lot of people building a collection on a budget, that math is the whole appeal.
For most of the last hundred years, if someone said "opal," they meant Australian opal. It's still the country most associated with the stone, and for good reason, it's where the modern opal trade basically started.
But the market has genuinely moved, and Ethiopian Opal has taken a real chunk of buyers who used to default to Australian material without thinking twice.
Ethiopian opal isn't new to geology, but it's new to the market in any real volume. There was a smaller find in the Menz Gishe area back in 1994, but it didn't create much of a stir. The deposit that changed everything showed up in 2008 in the Wollo Province, near a town called Wegel Tena.
That's the source of what most people now call Welo Opal. Within a few years of that discovery, Ethiopia went from a footnote in the opal trade to one of its biggest suppliers, mainly because the volume and the color coming out of that region were both enormous.
Australian opal, meanwhile, has been mined commercially since the 1890s, starting around White Cliffs, then Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, and Coober Pedy and Andamooka in South Australia.
Over a century of mining means the easy deposits are largely tapped out, and what's left often needs deeper, more expensive mining to reach. That's a big part of why Australian opal prices have kept climbing while Ethiopian prices, backed by a still-expanding supply, have stayed comparatively low.
Good Australian black opal from Lightning Ridge can run anywhere from $200 to well over $1,000 per carat depending on pattern and color, and top-tier pieces go a lot higher than that. Ethiopian Opal in similar visual quality, meaning strong play of color and a decent pattern, commonly sells in the $20 to $150 per carat range, with exceptional pieces going higher.
That gap is the reason so many new buyers start with Ethiopian material. You get something that looks genuinely impressive without needing a serious budget.
This part is subjective, but a lot of buyers describe Ethiopian opal's play of color as more "electric" or "neon" compared to Australian opal, which tends to show color in a deeper, more contained way.
Neither is objectively more beautiful, it's a different character. But Ethiopian's brighter flash happens to photograph and film extremely well, and in a market where half the buying decision now happens through a phone screen, that matters more than it used to.
If there's one thing worth understanding before buying either stone, it's this. Most Ethiopian Opal is hydrophane. Most Australian Opal is not. That single difference explains almost every practical difference between owning the two.
Hydrophane opal has a more porous internal structure, which means it can actually absorb water. When it does, the stone can temporarily go cloudy, milky, or even change color slightly, then return to normal once it dries out.
That part's harmless on its own. The risk comes from drying too fast. If a hydrophane stone absorbs water and then dries quickly, the uneven stress inside the stone can cause cracking or a network of fine surface fractures called crazing.
This is why you'll hear people say Ethiopian opal needs "more care." It's not fragile in the way glass is fragile, it just doesn't like sudden moisture changes.
Australian opal, by contrast, formed under completely different geological conditions, sedimentary rock built up over roughly 100 million years during the Cretaceous period, rather than the volcanic ash deposits that formed most Ethiopian material.
That different formation process is exactly why Australian opal is generally non-hydrophane and holds up fine even after decades of normal wear, water exposure and all.
Neither Ethiopian nor Australian opal gets graded on a single "quality" number. A few separate factors combine to set the price, and knowing them makes shopping a lot less confusing.
This is how light or dark the base of the stone is, on a scale that runs from N1 (jet black) to N9 (very light/white).
Black opal, meaning a stone with a dark body tone, shows its play of color far more dramatically than a white or light-toned stone with the exact same pattern, which is why black opal from Lightning Ridge commands such a premium.
This is the flash of rainbow color you see as the stone moves. Graders look at how many colors are present, how bright they are, and how much of the stone's surface shows color.
A stone that flashes red (the rarest and most valuable color to see in play-of-color) across most of its surface will always outprice one that only shows a sliver of green.
Patterns have names, and they matter a lot to collectors. Harlequin, a mosaic-like pattern of broad color patches, is considered the rarest and most desirable. Pinfire, small tight flecks of color, is common and more affordable.
Flash pattern shows broader sheets of color that shift as the stone moves. Ethiopian material tends to show a wider variety of unusual patterns simply because so much rough has come to market in recent years.
Transparent to semi-transparent opal (often called crystal opal) is generally valued higher than opaque material, all else being equal, because light travels through it and intensifies the color display.
This matters more with Ethiopian material simply because the sheer volume coming out of the ground means more of it passes through less careful hands before it reaches a buyer.
None of this means Ethiopian opal is more likely to be fake than any other gemstone, it just means asking a direct question, "is this natural and untreated," and getting a straight answer, matters more here than with a lot of other stones.
Ethiopian Opal. There's no real competition here. You'll get a bigger, more vividly colored stone for a fraction of what similar visual impact costs in Australian material.
Australian Black Opal, specifically from Lightning Ridge, has decades of price history behind it and a limited, shrinking supply. That combination is what actually drives long-term value, not just current popularity.
Ethiopian Opal again, mostly because so much of it comes to market in rough form and the price point makes it realistic to buy larger raw pieces without spending a fortune.
Lean Australian, or at minimum ask specifically whether the Ethiopian stone you're buying is hydrophane, and factor that into how you'll wear and care for it. A ring gets wet constantly, hands get washed dozens of times a day, and that's exactly the kind of repeated water exposure that's harder on hydrophane material over time.
None of this is complicated, it's just different from how you'd treat most other stones.
Neither stone is the "wrong" choice, they're just built for different things. Ethiopian Opal gets you dramatic color and genuine one-of-a-kind rough material without needing serious money.
